About
In this four-part hands-on experience, participants will gain a basic understanding of gouache and watercolor paints, while working on two watercolor/gouache still-life paintings, one with a warm palette and one with a cool palette. We will be practicing a technique that combines both media, beginning with a watercolor base and finishing with gouache. This involves studying how the medium works with the paper and each other. During our time, artists will learn how to evoke emotions using different color palettes and to use contrast and value to guide the viewer’s eye. The process will be broken down into 4 steps, done over the course of four labs, live over Zoom. Meetings will be recorded so that the instruction and instructor's demos can be revisited (editing out anything personal to the participants as much as possible). Meeting Dates and Times: September 21, 1:00-2:30 p.m. CST September 28, 1:00-2:30 p.m. CST October 5, 1:00-2:30 p.m. CST October 12, 1:00-2:30 p.m. CST Materials List (you will need to have all of this on hand and be ready to work at the first meeting): -Water color brushes; round brush, 1 inch brush, and a finer tipped brush. -Watercolor paints (Reeves fine water colours) -Gouache paints (Holbein basic 12 set) -Watercolor paper (Arches cold pressed) -Painter’s tape -Art board/clipboard (to tape your painting down) -Hairdryer -Two pre-drawn sketches of a still-life. About the instructor: Josh Meador is an illustrator, graphic designer, writer, and comic book creator of several indie and small-press books. He has trained in watercolor and gouache in his B.A. program, and has utilized the mixed-media methods that he will be teaching in this lab, which you can witness in the recent covers to his crime-noir comic series, "Lying in the Shadows."
